How to Dress Stylishly and Boost Your Confidence

First and foremost thing to know before purchasing clothes is your body type. Have a clear understanding of the do’s and dont’s of the body shape you belong to. There are 5 basic different body shapes like straight, pear, Hour-glass, oval and apple.

Straight: No significant differences between the size of their hips, waist and shoulders.  Since it does not have a well-defined waistline, the body tends to look straight. Wear baddy and loose clothes for volume. Wear clothes with fullness.

Apple/inverted triangle: Bigger on the top half of their bodies than the lower half. Slim hips and a large chest and stomach. Wear clothes that make your lower bottom look wide like ruffled or pleated skirt of pants with baggy pockets. On the upper part wear tops that have scoop or V-neck and do not expose your upper body.

Pear/triangle: Larger lower bodies and small upper bodies. Hips are slightly wider than the shoulders and weight is gained below the waist. Usually have small chests and flat stomachs. Wear clothes that have details on the upper part, so that attention goes towards the upper part. Wear simple, minimum detailed bottoms.

Hour-glass:  well-proportioned upper and lower bodies with a narrow waist. They are inclined to gain weight all over the body, in particular, the hips and chest area. Wear semi-fit clothes and wear a belt at the waist so as flaunt your shape. Almost all types of garments suit this body shape. Oval: Large bust, narrow hips and a full midsection. You tend to gain more weight in your stomach, back and upper body. You also have flat buttocks and slender legs. Wear detailed and clothes with fullness at the bottom to maintain a proportion. Do not wear a belt or any clothes that have to detail on the stomach part.

Give importance to the occasion. What you wear should depend on the event. Whether you are going to a business meeting, shopping, to church or to a gala event. For a business setting outfit should be structured, tailored clothes with straight lines and firm fabrics (suits).

Social occasions can include anything from a lunch with a friend to a formal event. The perfect outfit for informal social events is high waisted pants, denim skirts, khaki pants and turtlenecks. And for formal social events, a long dress is perfect.

Your audience is the people with whom you come in contact. They can be your clients, boss and colleagues (in business) or your peers (social situations). Dress according to the role you play.  When you are dressed out of your role your competence comes into question. You feel more comfortable if you dress to suit your role. For example, if you are going for an interview, your audience will expect you to look professional and polished. Wear a combination of blouse and straight pants with a blazer to match, a khaki mix and match suit, a statement dress or a blouse with a bow and skirt.

Colour is the magic that brings interest to our world. We are drawn to certain colours and respond to them with feeling. When used in garments and laid against our skin they produce either positive or negative results. The right colours will make you look smart and energetic; while the wrong colours will make you look tired and your skin drab. Colours are categorised into – warm and cool colours. Recognise which colour suits you the best and wear them to look better and feel confident. And also choose colours according to the occasion as different colours give us a different impression. For e.g. red gives an extremely powerful feel while black is a commanding colour and represents authority.

Your personal style is expressed in everything you do. When it comes to fashion your style is evident in the patterns and texture of fabrics you choose to wear along with your accent pieces such as jewellery, handbags and shoes. When you are aware of your style and feel comfortable with it, then you can express yourself with confidence. Style is basically classified into four- romantic, classic, sporty or dramatic. Romantic style is more like feminine and includes dresses and skirts. The classic style has an elegant traditional look and wears timeless garments like white cotton Kurti. The sporty style is all about casual comfortable clothes and prefers natural fabrics like cotton and linen. The dramatic style is sophisticated and is all about the current trend and fashion. Choose your style and feel confident in what you wear.

Keep all these points in your head while buying clothes and getting ready. Follow your body shape and preference to feel comfortable and stylish. You create your own style and fashion according to your comfort and likes.
